Beth Schaefer and Ilya Mirman, vice presidents at Verve Motion, are preparing their presentation to PepsiCo Beverages North America (PBNA). Verve Motion is the developer of the SafeLift suit, the first high-performance rapid-setup exosuit for the workplace. Worn like a backpack, the SafeLift suit, which weighs four to five pounds, takes 40% of the strain off a worker lifting a package, a case, equipment, or another heavy object, and includes integrated wearable sensors that track posture and utilization data. It is intended for workers who repeatedly lift heavy things as part of their jobs—like the warehouse workers PBNA relies on to distribute its products. At the Darden School of Business, this field-based case is taught in the second-year course on Digital Operations; it would also fit in a course on Operations Strategy as a way to push students to think about the welfare of hourly workers and the ability to leverage technology to support blue collar as well as white collar work.
